Computational Design Laboratory

Jinmo Rhee joins the University of Calgary

Jinmo Rhee joins the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at the University of Calgary, Canada.

In Summer 2023, Jinmo Rhee (Ph.D. candidate in Computational Design) assumed a tenure track assistant professor position at the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at the University of Calgary, Canada. At Calgary, Rhee’s teaching will support the new Bachelor of Design in City Innovation (BDCI) program and the Master of Architecture, where he envisions a seamless integration of design and computer science. In addition, he will also serve as the Associate Director of the Laboratory for Integrated Design, and direct DesTecTic, a lab dedicated to researching design technology and tactics for curriculum development in computational design, automated layout generation, and urban form typologies in Calgary.

As a computational designer, architect, and design scholar, Rhee’s work brings together the domains of artificial intelligence, spatial design, and urban morphology. He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree at Carnegie Mellon University’s CodeLab with a dissertation focusing on the development of new approaches to urban morphology using deep learning techniques. Key to his research is the development of new data structures that account for features in the urban context that are overlooked by conventional GIS methods. Rhee is the recipient of  several awards including the 2020 Young CAADRIA Award, sponsored by The Association for Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA). In addition, he has played important roles in SoA, including as a studio instructor and CodeLab manager (2019-20), and as co-instructor of the course Generative Systems for Design.

Jinmo Rhee earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Korea National University of Arts (KNUA), and completed both part I and part II of the Royal Institute of British Architects. (RIBA) To learn more about him, please visit his website.
