cyberPLACE: sacred place in cyberspace

Architecture is moving toward tremendous transformation. Once the most permanent form of art, architecture is being dematerialized in cyberspace. Marcus Novak, architectural visionary of the information age says: “Cyberspace is architecture; cyberspace has an architecture; and cyberspace contains architecture.” How much, then, of what we know about designing physical places carries over to the design of places in cyberspace? What are the mechanisms of stimulating the user’s emotional response through design in cyberspace? Places in cyberspace can - through their design -evoke emotion in visitors, much as the physical design of a building can play on the emotional response of physical visitors. To investigate these questions, I propose to design a sacred place in cyberspace. It will be a place for harmony, tranquil existence, and belonging. Drawing on seven architectural elements of site, density, depth, openings, proportion, composition, and light, it will create a sense of place.
