brief biography

Mark D Gross (BS Architectural Design, MIT 1978; PhD design theory & methods, MIT 1986) works at Carnegie Mellon University on computational construction kits, tangible interaction, computer-supported critiquing, creativity, and modular robotics for education. He is also co-founder and research director of Modular Robotics, a startup company in Boulder, Colorado that makes robot construction kits for kids. He has worked on constraint programming languages and sketch recognition. He teaches tangible interaction design and directs the Computational Design Laboratory in the School of Architecture. He also serves as the chair of graduate programs in the School of Architecture and Associate Head of the School. more...

teaching

Mark D Gross teaches Making Things Interactive, an interdisciplinary studio/lab course in which students design, build, and demonstrate projects in tangible embedded interaction. The class uses the Arduino microcontroller as a platform for exploring the design and implementation of physical objects and places with computational behaviors. (Spring 2009; Fall 2008; Spring 2008; Fall 2007)

In Fall 2008 Gross launched the Master of Tangible Interaction Design program, an interdisciplinary program intended to help designers acquire the technical skills to realize their ideas, and engineers and computer scientists to apply their technical abilities in speculative and creative projects.

In June 2007,with Susan Finger, Mary Shaw, and Jim Herbsleb, Gross developed and taught an NSF-sponsored design research summer school workshop for PhD students working on research in design in various disciplines.

Here are some of Gross's current and recent PhD students: Gabe Johnson (sketching), Sora Key (modeling spatial qualities), Yeonjoo Oh, (computational design critiquing) Michael Weller (modular robotics): George Abraham (Drexel), Hyunyoung Song (University of Maryland), Nwanua Elumeze, (ambient programming) Yingdan Huang (University of Colorado), (constructing 3d virtual worlds) Peter Scupelli (information hotspots), Lisa Anthony (pen based interaction) Eric Schweikardt (designing modular robots) other students: Greg Saul (paper robots), J. Eric Townsend (tangible interaction design).
