PLANTILES
a.k.a. CONTINUE

PLANTILES is an interactive stage consisting of fifteen wood tiles in a 3 by 5 layout with a projected display output. Depending on where the user stands and how the user moves on the stage, corresponding movies will be displayed on the output screen. PLANTILES is a tangible user interface that embeds computational meaning in a spatial relationship

This Project was featured in the "Responsive Environments" exhibition for one month in the Fisher Gallery at Cornish College of the Arts in 2002. Unlike many art installations with sensing technology, it is very robust and did not go down for the whole exhibition. There is a news copied from Colloege of Architecture and Urban Planning 2003 Winter Issue.

This project is built by Jenny, Dan, and Chen-Je. They also made a very nice video showing how PLANTILES works.

EveryDay Objects
Tile as a Switch
Each tile is consist of two chip boards. Each of them has foam strips in the center and tinfoil strips on the side. Two tinfoil strips on the top and bottom pieces make the tile work as a switch.

Simulation
Interacting with Your Steps
Whenever the user steps on the tile, the tile is activated and sends an on signal to the computer program to trigger the movie.

Pattern
Embedding Computaional Meaning in Spatial Relationship
Depending on how the user moves, the movies can be played in various speed and in chonological order or in reverse.
