Please join instructor Daragh Byrne and the students for the final exhibition and review of work from Salvaged Futures: Unmaking Intelligent Spaces.
This semester, students recovered abandoned electronics, traced their hidden histories, and physically remade them into models of alternative worlds—worlds where different decisions might have led somewhere else. The exhibition presents speculative objects, zines, and a collaborative publication exploring repair, e-waste, and technological futures.
Projects
Olive Bouseman – The Machine-Man! (Salvaged Object: Motorola MicroTac and Apple iPhone)
The smartphone has become an accidental prosthesis, an extension of the self that promises connection but increasingly weakens personal identity as we outsource memory, attention, and even our self-expression to a device designed for constant replacement. What if this cyborgian identity was not unconscious and commercially driven, but fully and intentionally embraced? If you have any questions let me know.
Inara Kardar – Happy, Healthy (Salvaged Object: Health Watch)
What if the 10k-Step rule didn’t exist? What if the pedometer had been invented not for the pursuit of physical fitness, but to encourage playfulness and active participation with the world? Imagine a world where the Smart Watch was not in the hands of cell-phone giants, but rather a product of hame companies like Nintendo – what if we had learned to define health not as competitive and moral, but as meditative, interactive, fun, and a genuine tribute to all of the activities the body can engage with?
Sara Krofcheck – Shared Suburbia (Salvaged Object: Hand Mixer)
What if the 10k-Step rule didn’t exist? What if the pedometer had been invented not for the pursuit of physical fitness, but to encourage playfulness and active participation with the world? Imagine a world where the Smart Watch was not in the hands of cell-phone giants, but rather a product of hame companies like Nintendo – what if we had learned to define health not as competitive and moral, but as meditative, interactive, fun, and a genuine tribute to all of the activities the body can engage with?
Isabella Shi – Counter Controller (Salvaged Object: Sony Dual Shock Game Controller)
What if electronic devices were treated less like disposable gadgets and more like long-lived civic infrastructure?
Bowen Zhao – Grounded Skies (Salvaged Object: DJI Drone)
What would drones look like if lithium batteries had been driven out of the market before they ever matured?
