The house of the future may be adaptable to the needs of its inhabitants. In this case we explored the idea of a patio that has a removable covering and what people would want to do in that patio.
The design has 2 parts. First, the interior space is layed out in the attached PDF file. The downstairs is arranged in the familiar kitchen and adjoining living area. The highlight of this space is that the kitchen celing is made of Bubbly Floor Panels These panels extend all the way through the floor, and contain water with an air pump creating bubbles through them. The
effect is that the lower floor can appreciate the light through the roof in a different way. The second floor also contains a bowl chair that sits under the patio. The shape of the floor is such to mimic the shape of the roof.
These built-in chairs encourage the inhabitants to stare up at the infinite sky (and make them forget that they live in a 15x18 box). The home is the individual’s sanctuary, and reclining in these chairs encourages contemplation and meditation - these moments of peace will become ever more important to the overwhelmed mind and body of 2020.
The second part of the design is the moveable roof. The roof is designed to cover the second floor living area and optionally the patio. The inhabitante needs with the patio can change from day to day. Sometimes it's a quiet place to sit and read - requiring shade. Sometimes it's a place to sun bathe, allow light in to the second floor (see bubble panels discussed above), or gaze at the stars (e.g. in the bowl chair). The picture strip above describes the sliding roof in more detail. The roof should be made of an opaque or semi-transparent material that is durable enough to function as a roof material. High tech tent or sail fabric is possible because of strength, flexibility, weight and impermeability.
