This model is a diagram about building an active and dynamic wall system. Each of the functions expected of a wall (structure, insulation, weather barrier, etc.) is identified and given its own unique expression as a layer within the system. Two additional layers, which we call active and information, are added to the usual functions. Active refers to an outer layer comprised of many fins attached to small motors and controlled by a central intelligence that receives input on wind speed and direction, solar position, occupant use patterns, etc. Information refers to the interior layer containing all of the electrical circuitry necessary to support the intelligence of the active layer, as well as any additional systems inside the dwelling. By envisioning each wall function as a discrete element capable of unique expression, many conditions are made possible simply by peeling away layers from the unified whole. In some instances, all functions coexist in a single integrated layer. In others, individual layers peel off and create potentially occupiable space within the wall section. In places where a particular layer becomes redundant or is simply unnecessary, that layer would terminate. Where the active layer is present, information on indoor and outdoor variables could be interpreted by software and an active response to climatic and occupant patterns would enhance the building's performance and physical comfort while creating a poetic exterior expression.
