John Thornton
Major field:Mechanical Engineering Sophomore John Thornton
At night when I can't fall asleep I curl up into the fetal position and close my eyes.

Skills:

My strongest skill is designing and building things. I am a bit of a woodworker. My most recent project was a desk I built for my room here at school. I custom designed and built it. I even went as far as designing it in Solidworks and custom fitting it to my room. A lot of woodworkers tend to borrow designs from others, I like to make up my own. I also had to design it to break down into pieces so I could get it from home to school. I also built a chariot once that that a few friends and I raced in high school. The school offered to buy the chariot from us because they liked it so much. Its sitting on top of their display case right now.

Now that I'm in college, a big part of my time is spent designing, building, and racing buggys. I am the head mechanic of the Fringe Racing Buggy Team (here's the website: http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/~fringe/buggy ). We build a new buggy every year, so I'm getting a lot of experience in a wide range of advanced materials. I was a freshman last year and I learned a ton.

I just took the Mechanical Engineering Machine shop course this last semester, so I'm good to work in a machine shop now.

I don't just build stuff. I'm also into music. I play the alto and soprano Sax.
