      abstract:
Current designs for the home of the future often
unconsciously repeat themes from the history of domestic
technology. Historical awareness enables us to consciously
choose which of these themes bear repeating, and which we
want to resist in our designs. I will describe some of the
themes that recur in technology for the kitchen in the US,
and present 3 speculative designs that provide alternatives
      to them.
